I authored The Golden Napkin during Rice University’s Play-in-a-Day, an event where participants are given 24 hours to write, direct, or act in play. In other words, I wrote this script between the hours of 8 pm and 2 am fueled by caffeine and Oreo cookies.

The academic abstract: I argue Elizabeth’s gender required her to have the full support of both her privy council and parliament to tie the knot on a marriage — an impossible feat. Furthermore, the debates which divided her privy council over each potential suitor, including fears of a Catholic suitor’s influence in Protestant England, were political repercussions of her womanhood.
